Teaching
  • Substitute teacher

From 2003 to 2007, Kyle worked as a substitute teacher for School City of Mishawaka. With assignments ranging from special needs preschool classrooms to high school calculus, each day presented a new challenge. While most of his experience came on breaks from college, in the spring semester of 2007 he filled a temporary position at John Young Middle School. "Assuming all the duties of a full-time teacher provided me with a new level of respect for what my parents and so many other great teachers do every day," Kyle confides.

  • Music instructor

Kyle always loved performing and developed a particular affinity for marching band and percussion while in high school. "When I later had the opportunity to share the skills I had learned, I was thrilled," Kyle says. "Serving as an adjunct instructor for both Mishawaka High School and Elkhart Central High School bands, while not always glamorous, was a rewarding experience. To see kids that I had tutored as freshmen graduate four years later as mature young adults solidified in my mind the importance of extra-curricular outlets in a student's personal development."

Professional
  • Legal

Following his first year of law school, Kyle was fortunate enough to be employed as a summer associate at South Bend's largest law firm, Barnes & Thornburg LLP. "Working with so many talented attorneys has taught me a great deal not only about practicing law, but also about approaching problems in general," shares Kyle. "In this profession, the client's needs are your needs, so we deal with a wide variety of people and matters. Often times we are expected to be an "expert" on an industry or process that we knew nothing about just a few days earlier." Demands such as these have taught Kyle to get straight to the heart of a problem when tough decisions are required.

  • Business

Kyle's degree in marketing opened doors to a number of interesting internships that provided him with knowledge of the South Bend community as well as how a professional organization should be run. From private industry to academia to community economic development, Kyle understands what it takes to be a member of a successful team.
